The Future of Mass Timber + Alignment to Passive House

The highly anticipated Mass Timber code changes have been enacted, and Mass Timber products are ready to take part in transforming the building industry. A series of existing, planned, and conceptual project case studies will be reviewed demonstrating the potential of the new Type IV code sections. Innovative mass timber products carry an inherent alignment for higher performing envelope systems that could shift industry strategy for reducing energy consumption while contributing to a reduction of CO2 emissions through carbon sequestration. Given this alignment and advances in air-barrier systems, the perceived barrier to Passive House standards is dissipating. A review of conventional construction methodologies of the Solis Apartments, currently under construction and seeking Passive House certification, will make apparent how accessible high performing buildings really are.

Senior Associate with Weber Thompson, Kirsten Clemens is a passionate designer with the ability to create a visual story to relate her design work to a wide audience and variety of populations. She applies those skills to her mixed-use projects, ranging from one to forty stories. She is a core member of Weber Thompson’s sustainability task force, and was the lead designer of Solis, one of Seattle’s largest multifamily Passive House structures to date, currently under construction. In addition, she is part of a team at WT studying the application of mass timber in high-rise structures and was a speaker at the 2018 AIA Washington Advocacy Summit, 2019 WABO Annual Education Institute, and AIA Seattle reviewing the amendment to the WA State Building Code to permit the use of mass timber construction in a high-rise format. This year she developed projectwhittle — a conceptual study combining CLT, modular construction, and hospitality as part of an internal research and innovation effort at the firm. Outside the office, Kirsten wrapped up a 10-year term on the Seattle Architecture Foundation Board of Directors, which will allow her more free time to participate in design dialogue through the world of academia.

Presentation is pending approval for 1 hour of AIA continuing education credits.
