Tour of UW Life Sciences Building

The Life Sciences Building at the University of Washington embodies Biology’s core values of scientific discovery, collaboration, active learning, and environmental sustainability. With these core values in mind, Perkins & Will designed a flexible, collaborative and highly sustainable building. Large landings on the open stair and breakout spaces with soft seating create connections between students, faculty, and researchers. Innovative solar glass fins put science on display while generating enough electricity to light 12,400 square feet of offices year round. And a greenhouse located just a couple steps from Seattle’s largest pedestrian trail encourages the community to engage with the University and discover the science happening within.

The building envelope incorporates many other high-performance systems that are not as visible. These include split-insulated walls for very high thermal performance,  continuous exterior insulation with thermally-broken cladding attachments, extruded silicone sheets at window perimeters, structurally glazed windows using very-high-bond adhesive tape, and very low whole-building air-leakage rate. More information on the building can be found at: https://convergence-lsb.com/

Devin Kleiner is a Senior Project Architect and Senior Associate at Perkins & Will. With over 17 years of experience in architecture, Devin was the Project Architect and Sustainability Lead for the University of Washington Life Sciences Building. Over the past 10 years Devin has led the Sustainable Design Initiative for the Perkins & Will Seattle office receiving project awards including the AIA Seattle Energy in Design, AIA Civic Design Awards for both Washington and the Pacific Northwest Region, the Society for College and University Planning (SCUP), the Association of College Unions International (ACUI) and the Living Building Challenge competition. Devin has been an instructor and frequent lecturer at the University of Washington Department of Architecture.

Medgar Marceau is a principal and senior building science engineer at Morrison Hershfield. He has 20 years of experience in  building science, energy codes, and environmental life cycle assessment. His experience includes building envelope design and review, hygrothermal modeling, environmental life cycle assessment of concrete and concrete structures, whole-building energy simulation, public speaking on energy codes, and performing envelope trade-off calculations for energy code. He received his bachelor of science in engineering from the University of New Brunswick and master's degrees in applied science from Concordia University and applied mathematics from DePaul University. He is a licensed professional engineer. Medgar has presented throughout the PNW for AIA and the Northwest Energy Efficiency Council, and he has authored papers on thermal performance and energy modeling of the building envelope.

Getting There:

There are two entrances to the building - one off Stevens Way and another off the Burke-Gilman trail. Use either entrance and meet in Room 401 for the presentation and start of the tour. By Light Rail – Exit at the UW Light Rail Station and cross Montlake Blvd to the west to join up with the Burke-Gilman Trail. The Life Science Building will be on the right (north side of the trail). By Car – Enter campus at the gatehouse at the intersection of 15th Ave NE and NE 40th Street, and ask for the closest parking to the Life Sciences Building. Typically the Central Plaza Garage has available parking. The Life Sciences Building is to the south, off of Stevens Way. On street parking is also available on the streets around campus.
