Alchemy of Architecture
While we ALL know that the world revolves around Architecture, ALL of the products used to build things are made up of chemicals. I don’t mean to scare you, but I am a Chemist, with 40 years of experience helping non-chemist understand how chemistry influences things that happen in Construction. Presentation learning objectives include the following.
- First and foremost, whatever you want to talk about. The most important part of this discussion is what is important to you.
- Available products on the market (often of vastly different chemistries) are changing (new ones being added, very few going away!!) at an incredible rate. How do you keep up? Let’s talk about it.
- Compatibility – what does that mean? Adhesion? No, it means do two of more materials (often of different chemistries) “peacefully get along”? Or do they eat each other?
- Does sequence matter? Yes, it does. Some things are meant to happen first (love, then marriage?), so we’ll have some examples and discussion about that.
After 34 years with a major silicone sealant company, David Kimball retired and started anew with Prosoco, Inc. as a technical specialist in their building envelope group, covering the North Atlantic Region with his office in Brooklyn, New York. While David spent years living in many different parts of the country, primarily in a technical service role, working on weatherseal, structural glazing, and exterior coatings applications, the unique challenge that rough opening preparation and air/vapor barriers brings is inspiring.
